Monster

Synopsis

Perhaps there should be a limit to the number of Kore-eda films we show, but as long as he keeps producing great films, I am more than happy to keep screening them.

Set in a small Japanese town, the young Minato is accused of bullying a classmate, leading to a series of unsettling events which Kore-eda shoots from several perspectives during the film, to great effect. This layered, multifaceted look at how individuals interpret and distort reality is filmed with Kore-eda’s typical sensitivity.

Monster doesn’t provide easy answers, but instead offers a poignant reflection on the complexities of human behaviour and the often blurry line between victim and perpetrator. Thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, it’s another belter from Kore-eda.
