Synopsis
Blending erotic drama with proto-folk horror, Hiroshi Teshigahara’s sensuous existential nightmare is one of the defining films of the Japanese new wave.
Searching for rare insects, an amateur entomologist travels to a remote seaside village surrounded by sand dunes. After missing his last bus back to Tokyo, he is persuaded by the villagers to spend the night with a local widow, who lives in a shack at the bottom of a deep pit. But the next morning, he discovers that nobody has any intention of letting him leave.
Adapted by Kobo Abe from his own novel, Woman in the Dunes was an international arthouse hit upon its release in 1964, with Oscar nominations for best director and best foreign language film.
