Synopsis

PhotoMonth: Photography Festival

From 2 October to 3 November 2025, PhotoMonth will continue to create a democratic platform where photographers of any age, gender, or practice can exhibit their work. It remains committed to showcasing photography in all its forms, making space for underrepresented voices, experimental processes, and urgent ideas.

PhotoMonth – Relaunching October 2025

This evening marks the return of PhotoMonth, relaunching with a renewed energy and expanded vision. This year, we’ll be exhibiting photography across all London areas with an “E” postcode—from EC1 to SE15, from Hackney to Deptford.

PhotoMonth 2025 will showcase the full breadth of photographic practice—from personal to political, street to landscape, portraiture to conceptual and this relaunch is also a tribute to Maggie Pinhorn, Director of Alternative Arts, who founded the original PhotoMonth festival, which ran successfully from 2001 to 2018 across East London.

Join us for the second event of this series at The Source where together we will celebrate Duane Michals short films and a feature film, Arthur Tress 'Waters Edge'.

Arthur Tress: Water’s Edge is an immersive portrait of acclaimed photographer Arthur Tress, whose surreal, dreamlike images have challenged and enchanted audiences for decades. Filmed over four years along the coastlines, towns, and hidden spaces of California, the documentary invites viewers into Tress’s world — a place where art, adventure, humor, and mortality collide. Remarkably, Tress continues to photograph every day in much the same way he did in the 1960s — on film, using his trusted Hasselblad camera. Blurring the line between documentary and visual poem, the film explores not only Tress’s playful, often subversive creative process, but also his reflections on identity, isolation, aging, and the legacy we leave behind. Through spontaneous photo adventures, quiet trespasses, and the surreal beauty of his imagery, Water's Edge offers a lyrical meditation on art, identity, and the fleeting nature of time.

Margaret Qualley plays the emerging, radiant new version of Elisabeth, while Dennis Quaid takes on the role of the manipulative TV producer who tempts and exploits her transformation. Devdas is a grand, emotionally intense saga of love, pride, and self-destruction. Set in early 20th-century Bengal, it follows Devdas Mukherjee, the sensitive son of a wealthy landowner, who returns from London to reunite with his childhood love, Paro. But their happiness is short-lived — Devdas’s family disapproves of Paro’s lower social status, forcing them apart.

Unable to reconcile his heartbreak with his pride, Devdas spirals into despair, seeking solace in alcohol and the compassion of Chandramukhi, a kind-hearted courtesan who loves him without condition. As he drifts further from redemption, the film explores the tragic consequences of societal pressure, emotional repression, and lost love.

Barbie (2023)

Barbie follows the story of Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie), who lives a seemingly perfect life in Barbieland, a vibrant, matriarchal world where every day is flawless and every night is a dance party. When strange imperfections begin disrupting her perfect routine—such as flat feet and thoughts of death—Barbie sets off into the real world with Ken (Ryan Gosling) to discover the truth about herself and the source of the disturbance.

In Los Angeles, she encounters the messy complexity of human life, including sexism, self-doubt, and the struggles of identity, while Ken discovers patriarchy and tries to import it back into Barbieland. The film becomes both a hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy and a sharp cultural satire, exploring themes of femininity, consumerism, patriarchy, and self-acceptance. Ultimately, Barbie must choose between staying in her dreamlike world or embracing the imperfect, authentic reality of being human.

Sinners (2025) is a bold, genre-defying film directed by Ryan Coogler, starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore—WWI veterans who return to 1930s Mississippi with stolen mob money to open a juke joint. Set against the backdrop of Jim Crow oppression, the story blends Southern Gothic, horror, and blues-infused drama as the brothers confront racial violence, personal demons, and a supernatural vampire threat symbolising cultural exploitation. Rising star Miles Caton plays their cousin Sammie, a gifted musician at the centre of the moral and mystical struggle, with standout performances by Hailee Steinfeld and Jack O’Connell.

The film won multiple awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Jordan) at the 2025 Astra Midseason Movie Awards. Hailed as a “transcendental Southern Gothic vampire musical,” Sinners is both a chilling horror tale and a powerful allegory about Black creativity, survival, and stolen legacy.
