Synopsis
Ricky Coogin (Alex Winter) is an obnoxious Hollywood brat for whom selling out is par for the course. When the EES company asks him to travel to Santa Flan to endorse their controversial chemical Zygrot 24, Coogin finds himself at the grubby little mits of sideshow scientist Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid), who's been using that toxic substance to manufacture his own brand of hideous mutant freaks, and has big plans for Coogin and his entourage.
The feautre-length directorial debut of Tom Stern (2 Broke Girls, Saul Of The Mole Men) and Alex Winter (Zappa, The YouTube Effect), the film was unceremoniously withheld from mass release by 20th Century Fox after they deemed it "too weird" for mainstream audiences. Developing a strong cult following in recent years when it finally emerged on DVD, with its incredible punk and funk soundtrack getting a deluxe release for the first time 25 years after the film's debut!
Co-starring an eclectic ensemble including William Sadler (Die Hard 2), Mr. T (Rocky III), Bobcat Goldthwait (Scrooged), Megan Ward (California Man), Michael Stoyanov (TV's Blossom), Lee Arenberg (Pirates Of The Caribbean), John Hawkes (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and featuring one particularly memorable uncredited cameo.
Freaked is a true oddball gem, an anarchic comedy with an incessant gag-rate, and some truly impressive practical effects and make-up, alongside a few alarmingly gross-out moments that do make you question how Stern and Winter ever convinced Fox studios to give them $12 million in the first place!
But we're so grateful they did, because Freaked is a laugh-riot, a raucous comedy that is both of and ahead of its time.
Boo, dude!
