Stockbridge Community Cinema
In 2015 Stockbridge Community Cinema was created under new management after our Stockbridge Town Hall venue was equipped with a projector (provided by the BFI Neighbourhood Equipment Fund) and a full range of audio visual equipment including a hearing induction loop. we show films twice a month all year round as follows:-
- a monthly Wednesday Film Night usually around the second to last Wednesday of the month with both a matinee and evening show
- additional Film Night Extra events showing films with perhaps less wide-ranging appeal including foreign films, documentaries and occasional 'recorded live' events'.
The audience, made up of local people from Stockbridge and surrounding villages, averages around 70 with a current hall capacity of 75. Wine, soft drinks and ice cream are available for a very reasonable cost which makes the evening an enjoyable social event.
We have a growing email distribution list (over 600 addresses) and send an email notification of each month's upcoming films. We pay for the hire of the Town Hall and use of the equipment but any surplus made is donated to local community causes and, over the last 10 years, have donated over £35,000 to local organisations.
We participate in the Into Film Festival annually with free film shows for two local schools (Primary and Secondary). The main objective of this national film festival is to encourage young people to go to the cinema and build audiences for the future.
We are fully accessible with the following facilities:
- lift to the upstairs hall
- toilet for the disabled,
- able to accommodate wheelchairs or those with special seating needs
- baby changing facilities
- hearing induction loop system
We have arranged meal deals with local restaurants in Stockbridge who offer discounts on showing a valid ticket for one of our films - visit our website for full details of these offers and any conditions that apply (www.stockbridgecinema.org.uk).

The Room Next Door

Synopsis
Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.
“It’s a lovely, mordant, tender affair; a lush September song in duet, performed with aplomb by Swinton and Moore as they stroll the secondhand bookstores or lounge by the pool they can’t be bothered to swim in.”Guardian
“For a story which ponders on late-life exhaustion and loss of curiosity and pleasure, The Room Next Door strikes a defiant blow against ennui, staking out new territory for the director.” Screen Daily
“The Room Next Door, as driven by the scalding humanity of Swinton’s performance, lifts you up and delivers a catharsis. The movie is all about death, yet in the unblinking honesty with which it confronts that subject, it’s powerfully on the side of life.” Variety

Paddington in Peru

Synopsis
PADDINGTON IN PERU brings Paddington's story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.
"Paddington in Peru offers a fun and lively hour-and-three-quarters in the cinema, and that's not to be sniffed at, but it comes across as the solid third part of an established franchise rather than a stellar pop-cultural phenomenon in its own right." BBC
"The best thing about the film is Olivia Coleman's flying and singing nun... it's a cross between Sally Field and Julie Andrews, with a touch of Helen Reddy from Airport 1975." Mark Kermode
"While it’s never didactic or heavy-handed about its messaging, Paddington in Peru also offers an idea of Britishness that’s multifaceted and modern." Slant magazine

Synopsis
Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect László Toth arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes. On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren recognizes his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost....
“This is a film with thrilling directness and storytelling force, a movie that fills its widescreen and three-and-a-half-hour running time with absolute certainty and ease, as well as glorious amplitude, clarity and even simplicity – and yet also with
something darkly mysterious and uncanny to be divined in its handsome shape.” The Guardian
“An austere, novelistic, self-consciously important film that unfurls in a measured sprawl, it nonetheless exerts an iron grip.” Empire
“As a state-of-the-US historical epic, it boasts all the thematic heft of Once Upon a Time in America or There Will Be Blood. (How did the wave of postwar immigrants remake America in their image – and how did America remake them in return?) But it’s also acted with the colour and fizz of a classical Hollywood comic drama, and shot with the loose, rangy energy of a 90-minute indie cult hit. The tonal mix feels completely unique, but it works.” The Telegraph
