Synopsis
Filled with quotable lines, stunning iconography, terrifying practical effects, relentless alien carnage, and a surprising amount of heart... James Cameron's Aliens is the sequel that nobody thought he could pull off, taking Ridley Scott's claustrophobic horror classic and twisting it into a war movie in space!
Even more incredibly - though less so if you've seen the film - Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her return as Ellen Ripley, delivering a powerhouse performance that helped the film defy the odds and bag a rare acting nod for a sci-fi / action / horror movie!
One of the highest grossing films of 1986, now regarded as a classic of 80s cinema, and cemented James Cameron as one of the greatest directors of all time.
We're screening this masterpiece for its 40th anniversary, so strap on your power loader and join us upstairs at The Globe, Glossop!

100 Years Of Community Cinema: The People's Joker
16-11-2025 at 17:00

Certificate:
Synopsis
This revolutionary DIY parody film and hilarious reimagining of the classic autobiographical coming-of-age story follows an unconfident, closeted trans girl as she moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian by joining the cast of UCB Live - a government-sanctioned late night sketch show in a world where comedy has been outlawed.
As mainstream success eludes our heroine, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects, misfits, and a certain love interest named Mister J, "Joker the Harlequin" is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader.
Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles.
Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film, THE PEOPLE'S JOKER is a deeply personal journey that's as much documentary as it is parody.
Winkingly called "the best superhero movie I've ever seen" by The New Yorker, and also a "a blasphemous Molotov cocktail of a movie" by Polygon, this is a truly unique and contemporary riff on superheroes, as well as a poignant coming-of-age story, but also pretty darn hilarious too!
See you at the movies!

Alongside the film there will be the usual Glossop Cinema Club malarkey, including an intro, prizes, and short films.

Synopsis
Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Toni Collette, and Eddie Izzard lead this hyper stylish musical spectacular from Todd Haynes (I'm Not There) exploring the impact and legacy of glam rock.
Loosely inspired by the life of David Bowie, and his meeting with Iggy Pop, here we have folk troubadour Brian Slade (Meyers) transforming into the intergalatic superstar character Maxwell Demon, and falling for the punk appeal of Curt Wilde (McGregor), all wrapped around in a "where are they now" detective story as Christian Bale's journalist tries to piece together the mystery of Brian Slade whilst revisiting the only lingering questions of his youth as one of the era's biggest fans.

This Is England (2006) at Glossop Cinema Club
22-03-2026 at 17:00

Certificate:
Synopsis
Winner of the Alexander Korda award for Best British Film at the 2007 BAFTAs, and Best Film at the 2006 British Independent Film Awards, Shane Meadows' deeply personal and hugely important film is a story of England in the early 1980s, and a troubled young boy (Thomas Turgoose) drawn into the world of a charismatic English nationalist (Stephen Graham).
A box office hit upon release, the film had three spin-off series broadcast on Channel 4, but it is the feature film that retains its power and legacy as it looks back - but also forwards - at what England was and what it could become.
Filmed in the East Midlands, with the usual intimate and almost docu-real feel of Meadows' directorial eye, enlivened by an impeccable ensemble including Jo Hartley (Adolescence), Perry Benson (Benidorm), and Jack O'Connell (Sinners), and a perfectly picked score of contemporary songs.
We're very pleased to present this film for its 20th anniversary.
