Certificate:

Synopsis

Director: Tim Mielants
With Cillian Murphy, Emily Watson
Runtime: 98 mins

Based on the novella by Claire Keegan. Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is a coal merchant in small-town 1980s Ireland. Everybody in the town knows that the local convent is one of the infamous Magdalene Laundries, but everybody feigns ignorance because the nuns have far-reaching power and influence in the community. When Bill, himself the child of a single mother, finds a bruised and shivering young woman locked in the convent coalshed on a bitterly cold December day, he knows that any action on his part will cost him dear.

WHY WATCHTHIS FILM? The book was very powerful, and the film has had fantastic reviews.

“With Cillian Murphy’s quiet, almost small and yet grand performance carrying the story every step of the way, Small Things Like These is quite possibly the best movie I’ve seen so far this year.” Chicago Sun Times

“Keegan's book was a small masterpiece and so in its way is the film, sensitively adapted by playwright Enda Walsh, gently directed by Tim Mielants, and led beautifully, heartrendingly, by the splendid Murphy.” Daily Mail

“An absorbing, committed drama.” The Guardian

FREUD’S LAST SESSION (2023)

09-04-2025 at 19:30

Certificate:

Synopsis

Director: Matt Brown
With Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Goode
Runtime: 108 mins

Additional Info

It’s the onset of WWII and Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins), who is nearing the end of his life, invites the celebrated Christian author C S Lewis for a debate over the existence of God. Exploring Freud's unique relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna (Liv Lisa Fries) and Lewis' unconventional romance with his best friend's mother (Orla Brady), the film interweaves past, present and fantasy, opening out from the confines of Freud's study on a dynamic journey.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? Because it’s such an intriguing idea.

“It's a terrific premise, pitting two iconic worldviews against each other to confront ideas about faith, morality and relationships. Director Matthew Brown has made a terrific-looking film, with strong period detail and a witty script. And it's anchored by two riveting performances.” Shadows on the Wall

“Hopkins and Goode give two understated yet impressively precise performances. We have no idea if two of the greatest minds of the 20th century ever met in real life, but that is all beside the point. The result is a film that manages to be full of tenderness and clever repartee.” The Sun

Synopsis

Director: Thea Sharrock
With Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley
Runtime: 100 mins

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark, absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbours: deeply-conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents start to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss and Rose might not be the culprit after all.

Warning: very strong language.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? There’s nothing like two of the finest actresses of their generation waging war against each other.

“The obviousness of the lack of mystery surrounding the real culprit, which is pretty much obvious from the off, means the film relies heavily on the performances to hold the interest. Fortunately, the director has that particular element on her side and, even if the outcome is never in doubt, it’s fun to watch Buckley getting a chance to let her Irish accent have full rein in the face of Colman’s buttoned up but self-aggrandising spinster.” Eye for Film
“Colman and Buckley are . . . an exceptional double-act whose comedy arises from their distinct deliveries, mannerisms, and internal approach.” Rogerebert.com

FALLEN LEAVES (2023) 12A

Synopsis

Director: Aki Kaurismäki
With Alma Pöysti, Jussi Vatanen
Runtime: 81 mins
LANGUAGE: FINNISH WITH SUBTITLES

In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles - from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? Admittedly a Finnish rom-com sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but it won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Fallen Leaves is consistently funny, but its laughs arrive without fanfare. They slide in calmly, at times obliquely in eccentric details, offbeat juxtapositions, taciturn exchanges, long pauses and amiably barbed insults.” New York Times
“Fallen Leaves is another of Kaurismäki’s beguiling and delightful cinephile comedies, featuring foot-tapping rock’n’roll. It’s romantic and sweet-natured, in a deadpan style that in no way undermines or ironises the emotions involved and with some sharp things to say about contemporary politics.” The Guardian
“Sometimes all it takes to turn your world around, for a few hours at least, is a small Finnish movie about a woman unjustly fired from her job, a stubborn drunk guy who knows when he’s hit the wall, and a preternaturally expressive yellow dog.” Time

Synopsis

Director: David Leitch
With Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt
Runtime: 126 mins

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. What could possibly go right?

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? It's tremendous fun!

"A gloriously fun, screwball action film." The Spectator

"The Fall Guy is exactly the kind of big budget film that’s actually made for everyone. It’s addicted to the idea of entertaining its audience and having you leave the theater happy. The performances are great, the action is strong, the comedy is even stronger, and the overall good time is infectious." awardsradar

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? For the eccentric characters and chaotic, playful vibe.

La Chimera is a film that utterly occupies its own fictional space; it expresses its eccentric romance in its own fluent movie dialect. I was utterly captivated by this sad, lovelorn adventure. The Guardian

Enigmatic, absorbing and so much more alive than any pottery behind glass in a museum, this is an exquisitely crafted, grown-up Indiana Jones steeped in its own distinctive magic Empire

WILDING (2023) PG

11-12-2024 at 19:30

Certificate:

Synopsis

Director: David Allen
With Matthew Collyer, Rhiannon Neads, Isabella Tree
Runtime: 75 mins

Wilding is based on Isabella Tree's 2018 memoir of how she and her husband Burrell completely overhauled the 1400-acre Knepp estate he had inherited in Sussex. The first thing they were told when they took over the land was that they would never make a go of farming it, as the soil had been impoverished by over-intensive cultivation, so the couple decided to experiment with returning it to the wild. They introduced wild ponies from Dartmoor, let deer wander, and allowed herds of pigs to roam freely (to the disapproval of their neighbours). All their cows and sheep live outdoors all year round with little husbandry.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? Tree and Burrell's extraordinary project will give hope to anyone
concerned about the challenges the earth faces after centuries of industrial farming.

"This is not an observational documentary so much as a lyrical, filmic rendition of Isabella Tree's book. The stunning camera work - a lot of scenes were filmed either at golden hour or as the sun rises on the misty landscape and the fabulous wild-life photography that captures intimate portraits of the animals that have thrived after introduction at Knepp (turtle doves, beavers, storks) make this film a joy for anyone who loves natural history documentaries. theartsdesk

"Knepp is a heartwarming spec of biodiversity good news among the depressing headlines" The Guardian

THE OUTRUN (2024)

08-01-2025 at 19:30

Certificate:

Synopsis

Director: Nora Fingscheidt
with Saoirse Ronan, Stephen Dillane
Runtime: 118 mins

Saoirse Ronan stars as Rona, who, fresh out of rehab, returns to the Orkney
Islands; a place both wild and beautiful off the Scottish coast. After more than a
decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love,
Rona now 30 attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. As she
reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her
traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set
her on the path to recovery.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? For Saoirse Ronan's performance.

"The film's use of colour is particularly effective - at the start of the film when Amy has returned to her family home in Orkney to dry out, the memories of her life in London seem vivid and alluring, saturated with colour and joy, as well as alcohol. Orkney, meanwhile, is shot in unpromising tones of mossy greens and subdued greys. The film's slow reveal of the islands' beauty is its secret weapon, as potent as the immersive, enveloping use of sound." The Guardian

"The always-great Saoirse Ronan gives one of the best performances of her
career as Rona, a woman who has to go to the literal edge of the world to fight
her inner demons. Shot on the windswept islands off the Northern coast of
Scotland, The Outrun is a reminder that Ronan is on the top tier of her
generation" Rogerebert.com

Runtime: 97 mins
LANGUAGE: PERSIAN WITH SUBTITLES

70-year-old widow Mahin (Lili Farhadpour) lives in a comfortable home and has a group of female friends with whom she can share jokes, but with her daughter living far away she is lonely and decides to shake her life up a bit. 70-year-old cabbie Faramarz (Esmaeel Mehrabi) doesn’t spot her when she sits near him at a restaurant frequented by pensioners with state vouchers to spend. She sees him, however, and soon sets in motion a meeting that will prove to be full of welcome surprise for both of them.

WHY WATCH THIS FILM? It’s delightful and heartwarming.

“The film is exceedingly funny, even in translation, right up to the point where the tone shifts dramatically. Deeply endearing on every level, from its anti-authoritarian politics to its body positivity to general joie de vivre, this is a crowdpleaser through and through (unless the crowd happens to be made up of moral policemen and dogmatic clerics).” The Hollywood Reporter

“My Favourite Cake is radical and heartwarming. Above all, it’s a reminder that in a world where everyone is scrutinised and judged, pure love remains timeless.” Time Out

“A rare delight.” The Guardian
