Synopsis

Agnès Varda’s second feature remains a highlight of the extraordinary outpouring of French movies in the early 60s. Following a pop singer around the streets and parks of Paris as she whiles away two hours awaiting the results of some medical tests, this subtle, innovative character study also succeeds brilliantly as a stylish, vivid documentary-style portrait of a wondrously vibrant city.

Agnès Varda is often looked upon as the ‘godmother of the French New Wave and someone who redefined filmmaking through a deeply personal, feminist and experimental lens. As a woman working in a male-dominated industry, Varda’s films focus on women’s experiences and perspectives through her own unique style, ‘cinécriture’ (cinematic writing). ‘Cinécriture’ playfully blends fiction, documentary and essay filmmaking while utilising non-professional actors, real locations and improvised dialogue to create works that feel deeply real.

Today, Agnès Varda is still endlessly celebrated not only for having the longest career of any female filmmaker (65 years), but for being a fierce and dominant creative force who redefined what it means to be an artist.

The Substance

Synopsis

Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. Easy, right? Deliriously entertaining and ruthlessly satirical, Coralie Fargeat’s explosive Cannes sensation is a be-careful-what-you-wish-for fable for the ages.

Starring Parminder Nagra as Jess, a girl who longs to break out of her family’s firm grasp, and Keira Knightly as Jules, a striker on the local football team who encourages Jess to join. A great film to bring a little summer fun to your dreary autumn Wednesday.

But I’m a Cheerleader is a campy, kitsch and ultra stylized comedy that is a staple in queer cinema and culture. This is truly a masterpiece!!
