A Matter of Life And Death

08-05-2025 at 19:00

Certificate:

Synopsis

Written and Directed by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger

Starring David Niven, Kim Hunter, Marius Goring

1946 • Running time 104 minutes • Certificate PG

After miraculously surviving a jump from his burning plane, RAF pilot Peter Carter (David Niven) encounters the American radio operator (Kim Hunter) to whom he has just delivered his dying wishes, and, face-to-face on a tranquil English beach, the pair fall in love - only to be summoned to the afterlife by a heavenly ‘Conductor’ (Marius Goring).

Peter must mount a fierce defense for his right to stay on earth. But is heaven just a hallucination brought on by brain injury?

Powell and Pressburger layer breathtaking visual tricks on top of this whimsical premise, such as a celebrated point-of-view shot in which our hero’s eyelid closes over the camera lens. The film also works as a sly satire on Anglo-American relations at the end of WWII.

Ranked as one of the greatest films of all time - a rare chance to see it on the big screen

Slade In Flame

01-06-2025 at 19:30

Certificate:

Synopsis

Classic film about the rise and fall of a legendary pop music group

Directed by Richard Loncraine

Starring Slade, Tom Conti, Alan Lake, Johnny Shannon

1975 • Running time 90 minutes • Certificate 12

Described as ‘the Citizen Kane of British pop movies’ by critic Mark Kermode, Slade in Flame both confounded and delighted audiences when it was released in 1975, at the height of the legendary glam-rock band’s success, starring the band themselves, this is a music film like no other.

Charting the rise and fall of a pop group at the end of the 1960s, this darkly cynical, warts-and-all portrait of a band in freefall amidst the music-industry suits who want a piece of the pie was not what anybody was expecting.

Slade in Flame has been newly remastered by the BFI from the best available 35mm materials.
