The Misanthrope by Martin Crimp

It's Nice Up North

21st Nov 2026 at 14:00

Certificate:

Synopsis

‘An intriguing sociological study of a slightly odd man’ SUNDAY TIMES

A 20th-anniversary screening tour of Graham Fellows’ much loved comedy documentary It’s Nice Up North starring his alter ego John Shuttleworth. The tour is also being presented as a tribute to the late Martin Parr, the celebrated photographer who shot the movie, and whose distinctive eye is central to the movie’s charm and enduring appeal.

‘Eccentric, beautifully inconsequential..’ Time Out

It’s Nice Up North follows the legendary comic character John Shuttleworth - on a gently absurd journey through the Shetland Islands to test the theory that the further north you go, the nicer people become. Foiled by failing light, let down by a flat car battery, and buffeted by the constant wind, John doggedly pursues his quest; asking everyone he meets the all important question; ‘Is it nice up North?’

Costarring Shetland tour guide Elma Johnson, as herself, and featuring the inspiring music of Shetland’s folk ensemble Fiddlers Bid

“A hilarious spoof travelogue" (Metro)

Graham Fellows will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A, and to discuss his on and off screen relationship with Martin Parr and how the photographer chose to adapt his legendary techniques to a film camera and crew on a remote Scottish island.

A Matter of Life And Death

Certificate:

Synopsis

Written and Directed by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger

Starring David Niven, Kim Hunter, Marius Goring

1946 • Running time 104 minutes • Certificate PG

After miraculously surviving a jump from his burning plane, RAF pilot Peter Carter (David Niven) encounters the American radio operator (Kim Hunter) to whom he has just delivered his dying wishes, and, face-to-face on a tranquil English beach, the pair fall in love - only to be summoned to the afterlife by a heavenly ‘Conductor’ (Marius Goring).

Peter must mount a fierce defense for his right to stay on earth. But is heaven just a hallucination brought on by brain injury?

Powell and Pressburger layer breathtaking visual tricks on top of this whimsical premise, such as a celebrated point-of-view shot in which our hero’s eyelid closes over the camera lens. The film also works as a sly satire on Anglo-American relations at the end of WWII.

Ranked as one of the greatest films of all time - a rare chance to see it on the big screen

Slade In Flame

Certificate:

Synopsis

Classic film about the rise and fall of a legendary pop music group

Directed by Richard Loncraine

Starring Slade, Tom Conti, Alan Lake, Johnny Shannon

1975 • Running time 90 minutes • Certificate 12

Described as ‘the Citizen Kane of British pop movies’ by critic Mark Kermode, Slade in Flame both confounded and delighted audiences when it was released in 1975, at the height of the legendary glam-rock band’s success, starring the band themselves, this is a music film like no other.

Charting the rise and fall of a pop group at the end of the 1960s, this darkly cynical, warts-and-all portrait of a band in freefall amidst the music-industry suits who want a piece of the pie was not what anybody was expecting.

Slade in Flame has been newly remastered by the BFI from the best available 35mm materials.

In the charged atmosphere of 1930s Paris, she falls under the spell of the Surrealist movement—and into a passionate, volatile love affair with the German artist Max Ernst. But as war engulfs Europe, their fantasy shatters. Ernst is arrested as an enemy alien, and Leonora is thrust into a nightmare of loss, madness, and survival.

Fleeing to Spain, she spirals into psychological torment and endures brutal institutional treatment. Emerging scarred but unbroken, Leonora finds her way to Mexico—a place of magic and rebirth—where she reclaims her art, her identity, and her freedom.
